Religious Accommodations at Work – $28M Case

Learn about religious accommodations at work in Canada and an employer’s duty to accommodate, with Ottawa employment lawyer Alex Lucifero on CTV News.

A former Miami hotel worker has been awarded more than $28 million because her boss repeatedly attempted to make her work Sundays despite her religious beliefs.

How far do employers need to go in order to accommodate employees where religion is concerned? Is it possible for a similar amount to be awarded in Canada?

Alex Lucifero, managing partner at Samfiru Tumarkin LLP and an Ottawa employment lawyer, answered those questions and more with host Annette Goerner on CTV Morning Live Ottawa. He explained an employer’s duty to accommodate an employee’s request for religious accommodation. Watch this video to learn about religious accommodations in the workplace in Canada.

Alex also revealed that a violation of an employee’s human rights in this situation can lead to a constructive dismissal, allowing the employee to leave their job with severance pay (through help from a constructive dismissal lawyer/severance pay lawyer).
